After using windows for 17 years – my wife gifted me MacBook pro on my birthday. Trust me – after one week of Mac usage all my excitement crashed. I am a blogger & a YouTube video creator – How could i accept defeat?
Started learning step by step and now after 2 years – a colleague watched me using shortcuts and jokingly addressed me – Mac Ninja. I love teaching & sharing what i know best.
I take this opportunity to share 15 less known but useful hotkeys that any Mac user should know ( In no particular order).
1. Open search Engine on browser window:
cmd+options+F – Opens search engine on the same browser window. For some users this may open Google and for some Bing, depending upon search preference settings of the browser.
2. Take Screenshot – select portion of screen and full screen:
cmd + Shift+3 – Take screenshot of entire screen, want to take screenshot of a specific portion – use the combination cmd+shift+4, move the crosshair on the selected part and screenshot is saved on desktop.
If you are looking at taking screenshot of a specific window then cmd+shift+4 then spacebar. After this click on the window or object for which you need screenshot.
3. Shortcut to compose email & share link:
cmd+shift+I – Reading some blog or watching your favorite video on youtube, it just takes this shortcut key combination to send link to someone over an email. This hotkey works on Chrome & safari browser.
Keyboard below will familiarize you to the shortcut keys:
Command key – Red box besides space bar, also written as cmd.
options – Black color rectangle – also called alt.
Control – Located between Fn and options key.
Shift – Above control &options key and on left of Z key.
4. Hide window:
Cmd+ H – Hide windows of front app. If you have chat window open in background & Boss walks in- use the shortcut – cmd+option+H.. Only your front app will remain open – rest everything hides.
I was using cmd+m previously to minimize app but it had a shortcoming – minimized apps were not visible when i used the cmd+tab to look through open apps.
5. Open New tab on web browser:
Cmd+T – This works for chrome, safari and Firefox to open new tab.
6. How to close the last opened tab on web browser?
cmd+ w – close the last opened tab, the one which is highlighted as current tab.
7. Open last closed tab:
Cmd+Shift+T – Closed a tab by mistake, worst happens if you don’t remember the link – use this hotkey to open last closed tab, works on chrome, Firefox and safari.
8. Go to next tab on web browser:
Control+Tab – Go to next tab on chrome, Firefox & Opera, superb shortcut for people who work with multiple tabs on one browser.
9. Reload current page:
Command+ R – Once in a day atleast , i use this for some website or the other.
10. Close all apps to reach Desktop:
Command+F3 – Closes all open applications out of the way, so you can look at the desktop and may be come out of clutter of applications. similar function can be performed by fn+F11 , repeat it again and all apps will open back on the screen.
11. Reach out specific tab on web browser:
Command+ number – Good shortcut to impress upon people. With multiple tabs open on a browser – cmd+4 -will open the 4th tab, similarly cmd+1 will first tab on the browser.
This will make you tab scrolling expert for sure.
12. Scroll to top or bottom of web page:
Command + arrow key – Browsing long content – one shortcut can take you to bottom of content cmd+down arrow key, similarly cmd+up arrow key for the opposite.
13. Log out of Mac OS user account:
Shift+command+Q – Logout of user account, You will be prompted to confirm with option to Reopen windows when logging back in.
14. Put all files on desktop under one folder:
Command+control+N – Select the files on your desktop and use this hotkey to put them all under one folder. Real quick way to clear the clutter on desktop.
15. How to Launch Quick view?
After selecting the media file once hit – Cmd+Y or hit the spacebar once. This will open a quick view of the content and by pressing esc key, it closes. Awesome shortcut for bloggers or people who have files with similar names but different content.
