Have you deleted some important files from your External Hard Disk or USB Flash Drive or from SD card and want to recover them? This is a common mistake many people make. When you delete your files from your computer, then, Windows just remove the file entry and not the whole file. The files exist on the same drive but you can’t see them. Now, you might be thinking why Windows does this, instead of deleting a file completely why do they just remove the entry. So, the answer is that Windows make a backup of your files even after you delete them because at some point of time in future you might need to recover the whole data.
While there are many software for this job but the one I use is reliable. I am using in this article also has a Mac version and the process is almost same.
Now, if you encounter a situation, when that important file of yours (saved on External HDD or on SD card of your smart phone or on USB flash drive), got deleted, Don’t worry i am offering a good solution to get that back.
Step-by-Step guide to recover lost data from external storage
Step 1 – Download a software called EasUS Data Recovery Wizard Free 8.8 from here.
Step 2 – Install the software by following the simple steps.
Step 3 – Now open the software. Once you will open it will ask you to select the type of file you want to recover. If you know the file type like graphics, document, email, video, audio, then select the appropriate option and if you are not sure about it, then simply tick on All File Types. Now click on Next available in the bottom left side.
Step 4 – Now, you will be presented to choose the drive from where you want to recover your files. In my case, I want to recover from the drive F named Virtual World.
After choosing the respective drive, click on Scan.
Step 5 – Now it will start scanning and you will be presented with some files.
Step 6 – Now, here I want to recover an image named as My Certificate.png
To recover you file, simple choose the file and click Recover available at bottom left corner.
Step 7 – Now, it will ask you to select the location where you would like to save your recovered file. Make sure you don’t save your recovered file to the same drive from where you recovered your file. Always save your recovered file to some other drive. For e.g. if you recovered files from Drive F, then save it to other drive like C, D, E but not in F.
Step 8 – I have selected my file to be saved at Desktop. Once you have choose the location where you want to save your recovered file, Click Save as shown in the image above.
Step 9 – Now, once you click on Save. Your file will be saved in a folder named like “Recovered data Date at Time” as shown in the image below.
Since I recovered my file on 30th May 2015 at 19:34:10, it has got exact date and time entered there. This will help you to keep track of files which you have recovered on a particular day.
NOTE: – The process of recovering lost data from USB Flash Drive, SD Card is same and external HDD is same. You need to choose appropriate drive as mentioned in 4th step.
For recovering files from SD Card, you have to purchase a Card Reader. It will allow you to insert your SD Card in it and then you can plug the Card Reader in your computer. Alternatively, you can use Data Cable to connect your Smartphone to your computer.
Some Points to Remember
There might be some case where your file might not be coming up, in that case you should perform a deep search and see whether the file is coming or not. If the file is still not coming up, then this means that that file has been permanently deleted from your hard disk. You will get the option to perform a Deep search after you have completed a normal search.
