There are many steps and processes involved in SEO but the most important part is to find the keywords with which you want to rank your website in order to drag traffic from search engines.
Basically there are two kinds of keywords, Short tail keywords and Long Tail Keywords.
Short tail keywords are those which are either 1 or 2 words long and long tail keywords are those which are longer and mostly searched by the targeted customers or real buyers.
Suppose if you want to buy a puppy in New York then what will you search in Google?
Puppy shops in New York?
I am sure that if you really want to buy then you will search “Puppy Shops in New York” because it actually fulfils the purpose whereas if you search Puppies only then it will show the images and other results which might not be exactly relevant to what you are looking for.
On the contrary, if you search Puppy shops in New York then see you will see more relevant results.
Benefits of long tail keyword over Short keywords
For a business website there are two benefits…
- Relevant traffic – For obvious reasons, more specific is the user query, more relevant will be traffic. Similarly a general query will lead to high bounce rate.
- Competition – On a long tail keyword competition is low, which makes it easy for your website or blog to rank.
Key lies in identifying these long tail keywords and writing posts on them, Example : Try searching for “advantages and disadvantages of free web hosting” on Google and you will find my blog post in top 3 results. Do you notice the low competition for this keyword
So now you have a better idea about how long tail keywords are important for your business website.
How to find or research Long Tail Keywords?
Long tail keywords are source of great targeted traffic which can be converted into leads. They also help in ranking for terms that you would otherwise be unable (by using the short keywords) to rank for. Here is how to find long tail keywords.
1) Make Use of “searches related to” feature of Google
Whenever you make a search query, Google shows you few related terms at the bottom of the page as shown in the below screenshot:
I have searched for keyword research and you can see that this Google feature has shown many ideas. You can choose the most relevant ones as per your requirement.
2) Make use of Google Suggest
Google instant makes it possible to suggest ideas based on what you start typing. See in the below screenshot, I started typing how to use Google drive to …. and saw multiple search queries.
Thus you can try this again and again by typing different terms relevant to your business and extract suggested keywords to make a list.
3) Make use of Your Google Analytics account
If you are already using Google Analytics for your website then do make use of it to find some beneficial long tail keywords. Refer to below screenshot which is taken from Analytics. You can find it by Acquisition >> Source/Medium >> keyword.
As this list is taken from the blog’s analytics, the blog might be coming somewhere in search pages already that’s why it is getting traffic with these terms. You can take these Long tail keywords and make new topics based on these or you can optimize the existing blog posts even more which have these keywords in order to make the posts rank even better for these search terms.
4) Make use of Search queries from Google Webmaster
If you are using Google webmaster tool for your website/blog then login to Google webmaster and navigate to Search Traffic >> Search Queries, it will show you those search terms with which your website is somewhere coming on Google.
You can analyse the list as it shows the average position of the website for the corresponding search queries and make a better list of keywords to decide the next topics for your blog.
As you already have content that is ranking for the relative terms, we can use this opportunity as an internal linking chance.
5) Make use of Soovle.com
Soovle is an amazing online tool which I use commonly while researching for Long tail keywords. Just open the website and type any relevant keyword in the search box I have marked in the below screenshot:
As you type it will show a long list of keywords from different authority websites. It can help you make a good list.
You can download all these keywords as .csv file by clicking on the download button shown in below image:
Okay so I would like to stop here with the ideas to find out long tail keywords but you are not done yet. You will only get the list of those keywords from above ideas. Now you have to decide which keywords you can use for maximum benefits.
Bonus point: Try Google Adword Keyword Tool to find their search volume:
Now you have a long list of keywords with you, now you would like to know which one has enough search volume which means how many people are searching those particular keywords.
Just feed the keywords in the Keyword planner tool and it will show the details. Here are the steps to find the search volume of your keyword:
- Open keyword planner.
- Sign in with your Gmail id.
- Click on the first tab (search for new keywords and Ad group ideas)
- Inset your primary keyword; change the location if you want to focus on specific geographic regions.
- You can add negative keywords too (to not appear in the SERPs for when a user uses those keywords).
- On the following screen click on keyword ideas rather than ad group ideas
As I said earlier in this post that long tail keywords can have fewer monthly searches so you can think accordingly. In the above screenshot you can see the competition as well but keep in mind that this competition is not for organic search but for PPC ( pay per click) advertisers.
In case you want to find out the keyword competitiveness for organic search then I would like to suggest you to use Long Tail Pro which is a great keyword tool when you are researching long tail keywords as its name say the story. Once you get the search volume and keyword competitiveness of keywords, you are all set to go and use those keywords either for your SEO campaign for a website or for writing down blog posts for your blog.
