Sending emails is the most common means of communication especially when you are working online. It is very essential to know that your emails have been received by the other person or has been read by him. For businesses and freelancers too it is necessary to know that your client has read your email. By default Gmail does not give you notification when your email is opened on the other end and so today I will discuss certain hacks to get email read receipts in Gmail.
Before proceeding let me explain that a read receipt is a service that allows you to get notified when your email has been opened or read at the other end. While Google apps allow you to get read receipt if you have a Google apps account with your domain mapped into it. That means if you have something like Harish@technofare.com rather than email@example.com. So here are some easier and better ways to track Gmail emails.
1) By using a URL shortener
Using an URL shortener like bit.ly or goo.gl can help you track your email. When the reader clicks on the link that you have shortened with the above services, the receipt is received. For example if I send you an email with a link back to my blog shortened with goo.gl and you open it.
I get notified in the stats provided by the goo.gl service which counts every click on the URL.
In the above example, the link we send has been clicked on twice, this indicates we know that the recipient has opened the link and read the email.
2) By using an image:
If you are not sending any links or don’t want to use URL shorteners you can go for invisible images. I use who read me which is a free email tracking service that gives you read receipt for your Gmail messages. All you have to do is sign up for free accounts there and then add a suffix “.whoreadme.com” to your recipient email address. By this you attach a transparent image or tracking service to the email and it can send you notification based on who has read your email, the time taken to read it, the OS of the computer used, the browser and even allows email scheduling and weather detection. The free version allows 20 emails per day and can be used at your own Gmail composer mode too.
For example when you send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org edit it and send to email@example.com. That’s it. The rest has to be as it is.
You can now get notifications when and how your email is opened.
3) USING BOOMERANG:
Boomerang is an ultimate Gmail extension or plugin you can say. It has hell lot of features that can make your Gmail experience much better. All you have to do it install boomerang for Gmail. After installing just click on the “request read receipts and track clicks” icon on the bottom right corner of your compose mode. Make sure you use the standard Gmail version rather than a basic html view.
You will get a message soon after the receipt reads your message. Boomerang is by far the most trusted and used plugin for Gmail and supports read receipts in Gmail too. You can further collect information based on how many times your message has been read and the particular links clicked. This is helpful when you are sending some leads based emails to clients.
The tailmail is a fabulous free email app that allows you to get read receipts from Gmail. As this app does not ask your email id you can be assured of the privacy issues being side kicked. The app generates an invisible image code that appears in between *** and *** so that you have to put it on the email you send.
I am showing it to you in detailed steps:
- Go to your Gmail account and compose an email
- Open a new window/tab and open tailmail
- Compose a new tracker id by clicking on the “new tracker id box”.
- A new code/image appears on the right side with a blank space between two sets of “***”. This blank space is your invisible image.
- You can click it and copy it and then paste it on the message body/ Done.
- On tracking you have to then add the code generated before into the box after “get report on tracker id”
- It will generate the report and you will thus get the read receipt.
