GOOGLE – The World renowned Search Engine has answers to anything and everything one wants to know but everybody does not know the tricks to get those answers.
Let me guide you through some Google search tips and tricks which will come as a surprise to many of you. Using these will surely save your time and enhance user experience.
For this article to be handy and readily available for reference, best way is to save the link by putting it on social bookmarking site.
Here are THE 13 possible queries you may have, with an interesting solution to them for Google search:
- Query WHO HAS WRITTEN THIS PHRASE?
Solution – Search for the phrase in quotation marks like mentioned below in the example.
Example – “Try to be a rainbow in someone’s cloud”
Any search made on Google by putting the text in inverted comma will get pages that carry exact matches, It ignores relevant search results.Top searches identify the author and limit the search number.
Try searching for your name with quotation marks and notice the difference in result count. Save your time and move around.
- Query – REFER BACK TO AN ARTICLE IN E-NEWS PAPER OR WEBSITE.
Solution – Put your search key words on the Google search bar,Followed by site:url of that site without http or www but with dot com at the end.
Example – Few days back I read an article in “Times of india”(Indian News paper) about an Indian cricket player who got hurt while playing football barefoot.
I wanted to refer to it.
I searched –Barefoot football site:timesofindia.com
I could easily find the article in my top search results. Without this trick, it wouldn’t be that easy. Using this combination means that Google finds that particular search term in that url and displays it in top results.
- Query – WANT SEARCH RESULTS IN A PARTICULAR FILE TYPE ( PPT, PDF, XLS)
Solution – Type your query on search bar, followed by filetype:PPT ( or PDF or XLS). It will show results only for that particular file type.
Example -I was searching for PDF’s on email marketing.
I typed on Google search bar-email marketing filetype:pdf
Note : Searches are not case sensitive, you may type the 3 letters in capital or small, this will not make any difference to results.
- Query– WANT TO FIND SIMILAR OR RELATED WEBSITES?
Solution –You have found a good reading material on a website and want websites with similar content.
For this,Type related:followed by the website address.
My wife was searching- how to make egg curry on Google and found a good article on wikihow and wanted similar results, i suggested her to type on Google bar
She got limited but relevant results.
And I got to eat a yummy egg curry later.
- Query – WANT TO SEARCH PARTICULAR PRODUCT ONLINE WITHIN YOUR BUDGET.
Solution –You want to buy something and also want to stay within a budget. Simply type name of the product followed by the price range you are looking for separated by a hyphen sign.
Example-I was searching for JVC handycam in the price range $400 to $500.
I searched – jvc handycam $300-$500 and got relevant search results.
Note: Another way to do this is to type – jvc handycam $300..$500 on the search bar.
- Query – CURRENCY CONVERSION IN ONE SINGLE STEP.
Solution –Type- currency 1 in currency 2 -on search bar and the first result on the search page will have the currency convertor.
Example -I want to convert USD 1000 in Japanese currency YEN.
I typed on Google bar – USD in YEN.
- Query – SPELL CHECK
Solution – Type Define:search word
You will see definition of the search query on your search result page.
Example – Define:hummingbird
- Query – SOLUTION TO A MATHS QUERY IN ONE SINGLE STEP
Solution – There may be a need for this when you are bad at Maths or you may be good at it but have a complicated problem to solve, Google search can do this for you in one single step.
Type the Mathematical query on the search bar and click on search.
You will get the answer with calculator open.
ExampleI want to find –32% of 9000-(100)
Type on Google search bar and you will get the answer.
Note:This is a simple example. Google can provide search help on complex mathematical problems as well.
- Query – USE MICROPHONE BUTTON ON GOOGLE SEARCH BAR FOR SEARCH RESULTS.
Solution – Tap the microphone button on the search box
-It will ask you to speak
-You speak,it will read your voice & type it as text on the search bar
-And will show you results.
Note:This is of great help especially when you are walking and you want to urgently search something on your phone.
If you don’t see the microphone icon, then press down for few seconds on search box and it will appear. On android voice search is supported on 2.2 (Froya) and above.
- Query –LOCATION BASED SEARCH RESULTS.
Solution –If you want Google to read your location and show local results then
-below the search bar on the search page ,Click on search tools .
-You will see several options.
-click on last, it will ask you to set the location.
-Set location and get the required search results.
- Query – HOW TO SET A TIMER?
Solution – Simply Type – set timer 15 minutes or set timer for 15 seconds etc.
Note: After the time is over it will start beeping to remind you. You can stop it in between or can re set the same.
- Query–SEARCH BASED ON TITLE.
Solution –You have some information on a subject but want to read more about it.Simply type intitle: search query– This will show you all results with this title.
If you want to know about somebody’s social network or may be about his blog or website,Type intitle:Person’s name
Example– I knew little about Abraham Lincoln and wanted to know more. My friend suggested me to read a book written by Doris Goodwin titled Team of Rivals:The political Genius of Abraham Lincoln.
I typed on the Google search bar-intitle:The political genius
- Query – HOW TO CHECK YOUR FAVORITE MOVIE TIMINGS AT YOUR NEAREST THEATERS IN ONE STEP.
Solution –We all try various combinations on Google to find out show timings of a movie in theaters which are near to our homes. For this you just need to type Name of movie followed by movie times.
Example– Fugly movie times
